From Evora, we made our way up through the central part of Portugal. Stopping at Obidos, a great medieval village with a wall you can walk around, and then basing in Nazare. Over the next couple of days we visited the towns of Alcobaca and Batalha which are known for their monasteries. A good 1/2 day at most is all you need to visit those towns. From Nazare we headed east to Fatima. One of the holiest places in Europe, where 3 shepherd children saw Mary over the course of 6 months. It concluded with the “Miracle of the Sun” witnessed by over 70,000 people who saw Mary asking for peace! The catholic church recognizes the events! A truly spiritually emotional place! We overnighted in Tomar, before heading to Coimbra with a stop at a Shitz village, with the coolest little bar I have ever been in, and then onto one of the best preserved Roman ruins.
We finished up our tour of central Portugal with a few nights in Coimbra. A great little college town with a beautiful “Harry Potter” style library, and fun small city vibe.
I would recommend making stops through central Portugal and the stops we made. The towns are slower paced and quaint, get a good perspective of Portugal as a country with some diversity. A combination of hotels and VRBO’s, depending on the amount of time spending, is a good mix. We had a great little boutique hotel in Tomar!
